Tangential Network is a proposal that connects existing public facilities and attraction points using elevated Tangential Paths, while anchoring two new entrances to MongHa park with the use of Tangential Cores. The Network is to serve as a connecting tissue that forms a coherent pattern for MongHa Hill, providing a barrier-free connection among the adjacent districts, bringing the quality of Legibility to the neighborhoods. The entrance in Areia Preta serves as a connection to community and environment educational programs while the entrance in Fai Chi Kei serves as a new beacon for the tourism and the cultural sectors. This soaring tower, a proposed new landmark, is to deliver Imageability for the city while providing viewing platforms in various intermediate levels.
Tangential Cores are located strategically for minimal environmental impact. The small footprint of each core ranges from 12m2 to 24m2 , they were inserted among MongHa Hill in five locations in a non-invasive manner, with respect to the hillside. Tangential Paths connects these five new nodes as elevated pathways, providing barrier-free access to the public. The Cores and Paths are cladded with bamboo, an organic material up-cycle from widely used bamboo scaffolding. Coupling with the linear LED lighting elements, they exaggerated the form and provides a sense of lightness and directionality. Canopies over the Paths are created by populating solar tubes, providing shades for walkways and generating energy simultaneously. With the amount of area covers, it would offset the energy used by its LED lighting and generate additional energy to send back to the grid. Together, they form a Tangential Network that spans across 260m horizontal distance and 54m vertical distance, integrated to the topographic landscape with its ethereal appearance.
The proposal suggests to re-purpose and reuse as many existing structures as possible to minimize construction waste. In Zone A, The kennel structures are to be re-purposed as exhibition, event space, gift shop and cafe to tie-in with the existing gallery. An outdoor amphitheater is also proposed to expand the cultural elements. A four-story tall IAM back office is to be tangent to the Core, taking advantage of its vertical circulation. In zone B, the core is placed across from the columns, keeping the openness of the plaza. Only a small portion of the information center in Zone C is to be retrofitted for connecting purposes. Vertical access is provided for the public as well as the users of the center. In Zone D, to integrate with the future planning of street widening, the core is nested against the hillside without encroaching the sidewalk. It also houses the rubbish station under the staircase, partially concealed by the skin system derived from the Core.
Tangential Network is a system that respond to the location conditions with a global strategy. It delivers Legibility and Imageability to the city of Macau. by implementing existing facilities and natural resources through reorganization and creation. It serves as a barrier-free walking system, a landmark, sustainable urban landscape and an innovation in spatial design.
